Banana pup
Vigorous banana pup of a high yielding Cavendish banana. We are getting more and more big bunches from these guys.
We grow them as a part of our subtropical food forests. They have a dappled overstory of kanuka and play an important part in establishing these systems. We chop and drop lots of mulch around them regularly as banana plants are heavy feeders.
Bananas will be sent as a 'base' with the leaves and trunk trimmed (see last photo -I'm pointing to new sucker shoots that will be pups next year). This base has all of the energy to grow and after a few weeks will have put out new roots and the first leaves (second to last photo is a pup that is a couple of months old). I find new bases fruit in around two years. Depending on management fruiting should then be quicker and bunches bigger as the clump establishes. You will also have loads of extra pups to spread around.
Due to their weight these guys will be shipped separately to other more fragile products.
We use our bananas for;
- beautiful sweet bananas or fried green bananas.
- edible flowers.
- pollinators.
- windbreaks.
- greywater systems.
- a fast growing cut and drop mulch.
- sheltering slower growing plants in an establishing food forest.
- leaves for cooking.
Size; 3 - 5m high. Depending on management they can form large clumps with smaller bunches or smaller clumps with larger bunches.
Aspect; full sun or dappled shade. These guys are frost tender.
